During May 1944 the weather improved which resulted in that the II./JG 1 flew 14 days of action against the incoming 4-engine Bombers of the 8th USAAF. During the month the pilots in the Gruppe filed claims for 23 Viemots "Four-engines" and another eight HSS, out-shootings. To this the added another 16 USAAF fighters that was claimed, 10 P-47 Thunderbolts, four P-51 Mustangs and two P-38 Lightning's. This all for an own loss of 20 Fw 190s in action with another nine damaged. The personal losses amounted to eleven KIA and another seven pilots WIA. One of the pilot that managed to down a B-17 Flying Fortress during this month was Uffz. Josef Gold, who on 8 May claimed a Viemot for, his first abschuss. He would survive the war and manage to add another three confirmed victories ending the war as a Feldwebel flying the turbinjäger, He 162 Salamander. ![]() Here is the photo of "Yellow 5" that I based the profile on, a well-known photo and machine.
